On the Cover
Perhaps the most notable feature of the county farm was this two story brick
blockhouse, which stood on the grounds for many years before the county acquired the
land. Reportedly built by the slaves of William Harbert on the north side of his plantation
in the 1850s or 1860s, the building was destroyed by a tornado in January 1990.
Acknowledgements
For their help on "Digest of the Book of Land Certificates," tremendous thanks
are due to Aloysius A. Leopold, a native of Nada and present professor of law at St.
Mary's School University of San Antonio, who generously provided copies of the four
books he co-authored with Fred A. Lange on Texas land titles and title examination,
Texas Practice 3, Texas Practice 3A, Texas Practice 4, and Texas Practice 5, all of which
were of enormous value in deciphering the complex laws regarding land grants and
certificates, and to Stephen Wilson, John Molleston, and Galen Greaser of the General
Land Office in Austin, whose consistently patient assistance and instruction regarding
certificates and patents was, I hope, not wasted.
